My honest opinion on floral foam

Floral foam harms the environment, but you can design without it! Join Wildflower Academy for 100s of classes on sustainable, foam-free floristry.

A (not so) fun fact about the floristry industry: there are a lot of processes out there that aren't great for the environment, which is ironic because we are actually working with nature.

Despite this, there are so many amazing florists putting in the additional effort to reduce their footprint!

One of the best ways to do this is to remove floral foam from your practice.

If you don't know what floral foam is, or why it's not the best, I forgive you. It's not commonly taught.

What's commonly taught is that it's the best and only way to design with florals in events, weddings, funerals and retail.

A floral foam brick is a mechanic that can be used as a water alternative to keep your flowers alive. It's also a structural piece to build designs, You have to admit, it's incredibly handy.

The downsides are, not only is it a single use plastic, it's also made up of millions of microplastics that pollute our waterways. The brick also contains toxic chemicals that can cause health issues, especially if inhaled while it's dry.

While I don't judge or shame any florist who uses this mechanic, sustainability is really important to me and this is why I share, educate and teach the techniques you can use to eliminate this from your business within Wildflower Academy.

If this is something you've been trying to do:

1. You're amazing!

2. Remember, every tiny step is making a huge difference.
