Diversifying Income as a Florist over Christmas

December is a funny time in flower world - especially if you're in the wedding industry. Sometimes it's crazy and sometimes it's a little quiet.

For me, I choose to not take bookings during December after many years battling heat waves, bush fires and floods I decided it wasn't worth the risk and stress keeping my flowers alive and my team safe.

That doesn't mean I don't do ANY work though. Cash flow is important and I choose to use this month of parties, consuming and time off to diversify my offerings, try something new, bring in profits and expand my audience.

If you're starting out in the floral industry, don't wait until the New Year to make your move. There is SO much going on and this month is filled with opportunity to make your floral debut.

Here are a few ideas you can take and run with if you're looking for some flower action this December:

  • Find every art, crafts, Christmas and farmers market that's happening in the month of December and apply for a stall
  • Do a pop up at a local business selling christmassy florals - cafe, homewares, clothing, bar, nursery
  • Fresh and Dried wreaths to adorn your customer's doors
  • Offer Christmas party florals for the restaurants that at booking in the end of year chrissy celebrations
  • Tee up with a local business to do floral and gift deliveries - candles, cookies, booze, cards, cakes
  • Set up a seasonal floral backdrop and collaborate with a photographer to do Santa photos, pet photos, family portraits
  • Create dried Christmas tree decorations to sell - garlands or baubles made from babies breath or 
  • Design large scale floral installations for retail christmas displays
  • Offer flower workshops of every kind - wreath, kids floral craft, table centrepieces
  • Come up with creative floral Christmas tree substitutes - I know you saw that amazing hanging one on Tiktok
  • Floral Gift baskets for business's to say thanks to their employees
  • Collaborate with a styling company to offer party setup packages 
  • Reach out to wedding venues about any wedding fairs (this is usually when they are holding them or getting everything ready)
  • Finally, you're resting up in biz world and taking some time to work ON the business instead of IN the business take a squiz at your customer journey and quoting system - we're diving into Engagement Season and you'll want to make sure everything is spruced up on the back end.
